From Skylight Cinema partners Event Cornwall…

Building on our experience of delivering outdoor screenings with Film on the Fal and at Porthcurno, we held a season of screenings during 2011 at a variety of venues throughout Cornwall. Film on the Fal was also voted the Best Small Event at the recent UK Event Awards, and won the Bronze award at the Eventia Awards.

A successful season of 8 screenings drew to a close on Saturday, with Point Break up on the stunning headland at Godrevy. From May until September, we have showcased cult films in unique locations around Cornwall, in a season designed to embrace the atmosphere of each unique site.

By working with our partners across the county, including English Heritage, Newquay Cornwall Airport, SkyBus, The National Trust, Adrenalin Quarry and King Harrys Cornwall, we’ve been able to deliver a variety of fantastic events for over a 1000 people throughout the year.

Highlights included the fantastic Top Gun at Newquay Cornwall Airport, which saw the Skybus hangar transformed into a cinema for one night only, and the atmospheric (and particularly damp) screening of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves at Pendennis Castle. Now in its third year, Film on the Fal was once again a popular event, with audiences wrapping up warm under the stars for a night on the water to watch The Abyss and Master and Commander.

The guys from Nomad Bars provided much needed refreshment at each of the screenings, with beers, wine and a range of tasty hot drinks to keep the audiences warm!

Plans afoot

The Outdoor Screenings Season wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our supporters, which include MPAD and Cornwall Wildlife Trust, and we would like to thank them for their support in making the screenings happen.

Plans are already afoot for next year’s season, and we want to hear from you! We’re looking for more cult films in even more unique locations – so please email amy@eventcornwall.co.uk with your ideas.

Thanks to everyone that attended The Outdoor Screenings Season 2011, and we look forward to seeing you next year.

The award-winning Film on the Fal cinema events return to the King Harry Ferry on June 2 and 3.

Part of 2011’s Greenbank Fal River Festival, watery-themed blockbusters Master and Commander and the Abyss will show as the ferry is transformed into a floating cinema.

Co-ordinated by Event Cornwall and Skylight Cinema, Film on the Fal is part of the Outdoor Screenings Seasons – eight special al fresco cinema evenings taking place at beautiful locations throughout the county.

Organiser Claire Eason-Bassett, director at Event Cornwall, said: “The concept of combining stunning and unique locations with classic film has really caught on.

“The experience of watching a film aboard the King Harry Ferry when the River Fal is at its most serene is really special.”

Master and Commander will be screened on Thursday, June 2 at 9.30pm, while The Abyss is on Friday, June 3, also at 9.30pm.

Film on the Fal has been running as part of the annual Fal River Festival since 2009, and has won national event industry awards for its creative concept.

This year, the films will be projected onto an 8m by 4m inflatable screen using high quality digital projection with Dolby 5.1 surround sound, working with Skylight Outdoor Mobile Cinema.

Toby Budd, festival director of the Greenbank Fal River Festival, said: “It’s brilliant that Film on the Fal has become a big highlight of the festival and has been gaining national recognition.”

The team behind the hugely successful Film on the Fal event is expanding the business to bring open air movie screenings to Cornwall.

Skylight Cinema is owned by King Harry Ferry which puts on the Fal River Festival annually each May.

The ferry is turned into a floating cinema for the screenings and the outdoor movies concept is now being extended so shows can be put on throughout the county.

Toby Budd, from Skylight Cinema, said they hope it will boost Cornwall’s tourism industry. “We launched the King Harry’s Cornwall area guide with the aim of extending the out of season tourism industry and we think this is a great way of keeping in line with that ethos.

“The outdoor cinema screenings will hopefully provide a boost to tourism by attracting hundreds of people to watch films in spectacular settings.”

The Film on the Fal concept, managed by Event Cornwall, won Best Small Event in the inaugural UK Event Awards this year.

Event Cornwall will manage the screenings at a variety of venues on behalf of Skylight Cinema.

Newquay Airport, Pendennis Castle, Adrenalin Quarry and King Harry Ferry are just some of the fantastic sites that the cinema will be set up.

Director, Claire Eason-Bassett, said: “The feedback we receive from film lovers each year is that they would like to see more movies elsewhere in the county, so this is a great opportunity to do exactly that.

“We are just in the process of finalising the dozen locations for the screenings that have already been booked so far.”

The 8m x 4m open-air inflatable screen enables up to 500 people to watch a film at any one time.

Toby said Skylight Cinema is also hiring out the mobile outdoor cinema: “The state-of-the-art digital projection and Dolby 5.1 surround sound system will guarantee a unique experience.

“The cinema can be used outdoor or indoor to suit your needs and with high quality equipment and professional staff, we can guarantee a stunning event.”

Anyone wanting to hire the mobile cinema for a screening should e-mail toby@kingharry.net for more information.

A Cornish event management company has won a major national award for turning the King Harry Ferry into a floating cinema.

Event Cornwall won Best Small Event in the inaugural UK Event Awards 2010 for its Film on the Fal events, part of the Fal River Festival.

The Truro-based company was also part of the BBC Blast tour, which won Best Educational Event and the Chairman’s Prize.

Meanwhile Art in the City, a cultural festival run by Totally Truro Business Improvement District and Event Cornwall, was shortlisted alongside the MOBOs in the Best Cultural Event category.

Director Claire Eason-Bassett attended the ceremony at Ramada Picadilly in Manchester on October 28.

She said: “The UK Event Awards are judged by event management and hospitality professionals and this award recognises the creativity and partnership working with King Harry’s Cornwall as well as the practical delivery of a great little event.

“We are really chuffed that Event Cornwall has been awarded this level of national profile, that Art in the City and Totally Truro made it to the final and that one of our flagship projects, BBC Blast, has also been recognised as an example of excellence.

“A huge thank you to all of you who have been so supportive of us as a company and thank you to all those who have helped us make these events happen.”

Event Cornwall has also reached the shortlist of the Eventia Awards for Film on the Fal, as well as Best Managed Small Company category of the Cornwall Sustainability Awards.

Tim Brinkman, director of the Hall for Cornwall, passed on his congratulations to the team, saying: “It is fantastic that a Cornwall organisation is flying our flag so successfully and bringing such great events to Cornwall.”

Director of the UK Event Awards Lynn Lester commented on the calibre of winner’s and nominees: “The high standard of entrants made it very difficult for our panel on the judging day to decide who was going to come out top in each category.

“We have had a great response for the first UK Event Awards and can only hope it continues to grow with the support of the industry from across the country.”
